@J.D.: I find the same. It's really incredible how vast the big picture is and how small the parts!

@Graham: I agree, and if being a nerd is a crime, lock me up (but make sure there is a large prison library available)!

A broad, general knowledge is the best thing to have in most cases, because it gives you a strong jumping-off point to any subject you might want to focus on. All that extra knowledge you have won't go to waste, it will help support the tall tower you're building of whatever it is you choose to focus on. Yay!

@Celes: Thanks! I agree, podcasts are pretty stellar. I love the How Stuff Works podcasts, especially. Nothing gets me pumped like learning about Archimedes or the Swamp Fox.

@Huda: Thanks, and drop me a line sometime about your experiences with MIT's Open Course Ware program. I've taken a few of the courses they've made available, but I've definitely only scratched the surface!

Great advice. Those are some really useful links, and I especially recommend everyone whose looking to expand knowlege in general, or in a specific feild to check out MIT's Open Course Ware program online. I myself am taking a few of their courses this summer and couldn't be more pleased with the selection, and resources they make available. YIPEE! Its fab. :)

Great post Colin! I love learning. When I find I lack inspiration, it's usually because I haven't been investing time to learn. I find podcasts is a great way to learn - helps maximize time too, when I listen to them during my exercises.

Maybe I'm just a big nerd, but I think that learning is fun! If I'm not studying something-occupying and exercising my brain in some way-after a while then I get bored. As an engineer I'm biased towards mathematics and physics. Right now I'm studying Chinese (being in China, I think it's helpful) but now that I've been away from engineering studies for 6 months I'm starting to get bored. I want my Signal Processing textbook! Give me a calculus problem!

But really I enjoy all types of learning and I think having a broad, albeit sometimes general, knowledge is very useful and important for improving your quality of life. Wherever I end up back in the states, I definitely plan on continuing my education at some level (probably just some elective courses here and there like you).

Knowledge is power!

Knowledge nest eggs are the way to go and the sum is more than the parts.

The more I read, the more I learn about stuff I've read. I actually learn more about some books, by reading other books. It's as if the dots get connected by seeing from other angles. I also get a way more comprehensive view.
