It is refreshing to hear the same thing from another person. I have been saying this FOREVER. We do almost everything for sex. Sure it may come a long way down the road but definitely true.

@Ryan: Hey Ryan, thanks for dropping by! I’m a big fan of your blog, and I was thrilled to be on your Top Ten Gen Y Blog list for October…lots of great people up there, and you’re doing a hell of a job running it.

I agree that most people don’t have any idea of what their motivations are (which was the original inspiration for this post, actually), but by being aware of what those motivations are, an individual can lead a much more target, enthusiastic life (instead of just living instinctively, as it were).

@Gabe: That’s a very good point, and if this is the case (that we get satisfaction from achievement, not just the pursuit of reproduction) I would imagine that it’s derived from that original need to pass on the DNA, though it is quite possible that it’s moved on since then (we don’t have a super-long evolutionary history as agricultural humans, but that’s something that could have started earlier). At the same time, tracing it backward still leads to the same place. Such simple creatures these humans are

As an idealist, I’d also like to think that the satisfaction of becoming something great is as inherent in our DNA as the satisfaction of reproduction – all to pursue a great self for the greater world.

Glad I stumbled on an interesting read from the onset. While understanding the motive behind our actions is certainly important, I suspect it starts before that for a lot of people, particularly our peers. I’d venture that more than half the people on this planet of ours have clue what they want to do with their lives; maybe that’s while animal instinct typically wins out.

@Gubernatrix: It’s true, and this is what a few other people have gotten in to with their comments regarding memes. Society has definitely complicated the biological imperative (like it has done to so many other things), so it shouldn’t be surprising that all of a sudden creating the cotton gin could make Eli Whitney more famous than having babies (which I presume he did, but don’t know for sure).

@Nate: Haha, I’m glad you enjoyed it! Had that gem sitting around on an old hard drive and when I scrolled past it I thought ‘Ope, that’s the one!’
