Get organize and put stuff that you may want, but aren't sure and try and get it out of the way. If the next time your come across it you realize you don't need it, then you should get rid of it. Assuming you aren't in a hurry to downsize (like you would be if you needed money, or were traveling), this is an excellent approach to take. In the first stage, I consolidate, sort, and pack. Then I stick is somewhere, out of the way. Then, if I don't need it after a while, I can eliminate it. It's how I incrementally declutter and cut the dead wood. Good stuff.
